Apologies for the.... complicated references, but it's a complicated canon. These cover Lea's appearances in-canon, as both himself and Axel. However, they do not cover precanon. My headcanon is that he was raised by a single mother, who was often busy with work but very loving and supportive even if he wasn't the best kid. He played hooky, made trouble, all sorts of things, made her life hell. This leads into BBS. After the events of BBS, Radiant Garden was taken by Heartless. This is something Lea partially blames himself for, because it happened during a more successful castle break-in. It was almost certainly 100% not his fault. He spent his older teenage years and adult life - 11 years total - as a Nobody, an individual told they have no heart or true emotions. Then he died for someone who made him feel like he did have a heart. He got better, though.
Personality: First and most importantly, Lea is generally kinder than he was as Axel. He does things for the sake of others more readily, and works hard doing them, such as going out of his way to save Sora. That's not to say he's not still a sarcastic, lazy ass, though. He definitely is. He prefers to get things done at the last minute (again, see Sora's rescue), and efficiently, but he does get them done. He's got a good memory, at least; he'll never forget if you help him - or slight him. He doesn't want you to forget, either. He's calculated ways to be more memorable. Thus, his positive traits include his kindness and desire to aid his friends. His negatives include laziness, sarcasm, and being manipulative. His long memory is more neutral.
Lea was shaped by his experiences. You try working as an assassin for someone who doesn't believe in breaks and see how that affects your work ethic! But he's also just naturally stubborn, always has been, or he wouldn't have kept at it. The biggest events that shaped him were the loss and regain of his heart. When he lost it, he became bitter and sarcastic, withdrawing slightly. He gradually opened up again in his last year as a Nobody, as Roxas's friend and mentor. When he died for Roxas's Somebody, Sora, in an ultimate sacrifice and expression of his lingering compassion, he later regained his heart and became a Somebody as well. This allowed him to become more empathetic. As his canon point is immediately after that regain, though, not much else has changed.
Lea's major motivation is how much he cares about connections to other people. Forgetting him is the ultimate betrayal, as even his little catchphrase - Got it Memorized? - reflects, but he's less... violent about it than Axel was towards Roxas. He will do anything for his friends - and anything to spite his enemies. He wants to make an impact in the lives of others so he will never be forgotten, has since he was a child. And he does leave a strong impression, even just visibly. The hair, the clothes... he stands out. Beyond that, his little quirks and mannerisms are designed to make him more memorable. He just doesn't want to be forgotten; he wants to live forever in people's memories. Whether he makes a good or bad impression, he tends to be a little guarded; most impressions of him have a kernel of truth, but aren't totally accurate.
Lea walks into danger with a smile on his face. He'll snark at baddies, kick ass and take names, even walk into known traps with nothing but his own skill to back him up. And it works for him. He's not one to take danger seriously. He'll be cracking jokes on his deathbed (and has, in fact...). The only thing that truly upsets him is being forgotten.

(Revision: As for empathy... In canon, Axel put his own desires first for a long time, even going so far as to attack Roxas in an effort to drag him back to the organization, but eventually became more able to accept his friend's choices. Lea retains that ability, and moreover respects and accepts Sora as more than just a vessel for his Nobody, a clear sign that he's more tolerant and empathetic towards the needs and decisions of others. He's also able to lift the mood at times, helping others shoulder their burdens, and is willing to rescue even those who he once considered foes, because their important people are the same. Additionally, he chooses dangerous roles and paths in order to help his important people, going so far as to search for Isa and become a keyblade wielder, both dangerous in their own right, just because he cares.)
Abilities: Magic (predominantly fire-magic), teleportation around and between worlds via dark corridors (will be nerfed if regained), keyblade use (and abuse)

(Revision: Though the possibilities of Lea's powers are seemingly infinite, his lack of training significantly llimits them in scope. He cannot consciously create large flames immediately, instead being limited to no larger than a fireplace or a small bonfire in size of created flames. This is due to another detail I failed to include (in this case a realization I came to at a later point, sorry); Lea is a little bit scared of fire in this AU. He was trapped in a burning building in his teens, it'd be hard not to be, but 11 years have cooled that down. He can change the shape and temperature of fire he creates to an incredible extent, and is resistant to being burned by it because of that, but he has far more limited control of the shape of natural fires, and no control over their temperature. He cannot completely put natural fires out with his powers, either, though he can make them smaller with time and effort.
With training, his fears could be overcome, and his control finer-tuned until he can put out natural fires with his mind, too. He will never be able to change the temperature of natural fire, as that is dependent on its fuel, not his will.)
In-Game History/Memories: -Raised by single mother, dad died when he was young
-Caused trouble as a kid and through teenage years, getting progressively more intense but capping out at school fights, hooky, and vandalism
-Got in trouble with a gang for fighting one of their members who was picking on someone
-Ended up locked and handcuffed in a warehouse and awakened as a meta due to panic, burning the building down (he was about 16 when this happened)
-Ended up couch-surfing to try to avoid GUARDIAN after a brief stint at community college
-Works at a cafe as a barista
-Got his own apartment and was immediately noticed by GUARDIAN
-Worst. Luck. EVER.
Any Differences in Personality in-game: Not that different, except that he's even more combative and disrespectful of authority.
